Bureau Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands.
INDENTURE OF APPRENTICESHIP

State of North Carolina
Duplin County

This Indenture made the 31st day of May 1866 between H. H. FOSTER, Asst. R. F. & 
A. L.  for the Counties of Duplin and Sampson Co., N. C. of the one part and J. 
F. SHINE of the other. Witnesseth that the said H. H. FOSTER doth put place and 
bind unto the said J. F. SHINE, one orphan named Adeline, aged 11 years (Father 
is dead and Mother has been gone from her child 12 months) to live after the 
manner of an apprentice and servant until the said apprentice shall attain the 
age of twenty one years; during at which time the said apprentice her master’s 
faithfully shall serve, and her lawful commands everywhere obey. And the said J. 
F. SHINE doth covenant and promise and agree that he will teach and instruct the 
said apprentice or cause her to be taught or instructed to read and write; and 
that she will constantly find and provide during the term of aforesaid 
sufficient diet, washing, lodging and apparel fitting for an apprentice and also 
all other things necessary both in sickness and health.
In Witness whereof the parties to these presents have set their hands and seals 
to the day and year above written.
