The scan clearly states the date the will was written in 1847 but there are estate records for this William in 1837. Obviously a mistake may have been made in the copy which should warn the researcher to study the original Will. (mmm) State of North Carolina Duplin County In the name of God, Amen, I William Kornegay Senr, being weak of body but of sound mind & perfect memory, Thanks be to God for it, do this the first day of January AD 1847 make & declare this to be my last will & testament, in manner & form as follows: viz Item 1st. I give unto my beloved wife Kitty Kornegay during her lifetime or widowhood, two negro men named Joe & Primise, one negro woman named Peg and her five children 1st one named Allece, 2nd one named Sarah, 3rd one named Frank, 4th one named Eda, 5th one named Rachel, also Hannah and her two children named Delce & Willis, also five feather bedsteads & furniture, also two mares called Blaze & Puss, also sixty barrels of corn, twenty bushels of Peas, three thousand pounds of pork, and all my blade & top fodder, also one barrel of lard & one hundred pounds of sugar, thirty pounds of coffee, twenty gallons molasses, also all my farming tools of every description, and five cows & calves & one yoke of oxen, five sows & pigs choice ones, also all my household and kitchen furniture, also all my stock of year old hogs and one grindstone, also twenty bushels of rice and one bay horse named Arch & c. It is also my will that at the death or marriage of my wife that all the above named property should be equally divided among my five youngest children, Nancy Thomas Kornegay, Winney Kornegay, Thomas Hill Kornegay & Kitty Eliza Kornegay, and William Henry Kornegay, share and share alike. Item 2nd. I give unto my – NOTE: The following marked through - grand children that may – Abram Kornegay one horse named Jess & two cows and calves, 5 barrels of corn Item 3rd. I give unto my grandchildren that my son Abram Kornegay has or may have, a certain negro man named Dave to them their heirs & assigns forever to be equally divided among them share & share alike Item 4th. I give unto my daughter Elizabeth Grady two cows 2 calves, & twenty dollars in money & c Item 5th I give unto my son William Kornegay one negro man named Peter & 2 cows & calves & c Item 6th. I given unto my daughter Zilpha Chambers twenty five dollars in money & c Item 7th. I give unto my daughter Polly Bostick 2 Negroes Ede and Danner. Item 8th. I give unto my son George W. Kornegay all the land in Burncoat that I formerly gave to my son William Kornegay and also the land where David King lives and one grey mare & two cows & calves, and four sows called the Blizzard sows, one bed 7 stead & furniture & one shotgun. Also one negro boy named Sam to him his heirs and assigns forever. Item 9th. I give unto my daughter Charlotte Smith five (could be a word was cut off on the scan) dollars in money to her her heirs, and assigns forever. Item 10th . I give unto my grand daughter Zilpha A. Smith three hundred dollars in money to be kept in interest by my executor until she arrives at the age of 21 years to her, her heirs, and assigns forever. Item 11th. I give unto my son Thomas H. Kornegay all my lands on the east side of Poley Bridge Branch Beginning at the head of said branch & running with the branch to the end of a large ditch not far from my corn cribs, then nearly South down a small ditch crossing the road about one hundred yards below my negro house the same course with a ditch to a large ditch in a flat branch, then nearly South west with the middle of said branch to another ditch, then South with that ditch to the Miller road on the edge of Goshen, then east with the Miller Road to the main road just below my landing then South with the main road just over Goshen Bridge to my corner. Also one graw old colt to him his heirs or assigns forever. Item 12th. I give unto my son William Henry Kornegay all the balance of my home land & plantation including my dwelling house & other oat houses & c. It is also my wish that my wife have her life or widow hood on my youngest son’s land. And lastly I do hereby constitute & appoint my beloved son William Kornegay & beloved son-in-law Whitfield Grady Sole Executors to this my last will & Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal day and date before written.
