DURHAM COUNTY, NC - MILITARY - WWI Memorial Service, 4 May 1919 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- This is a copy of a program for a memorial service arranged by the Durham Chamber of Commerce for the men from Durham County who were killed in World War 1. The service took place on Sunday, May 4, 1919 at 3:30 O'Clock in the afternoon. Mayor M.E. Newsom presided. It started with the audience standing and singing the song "America" as the soldiers marched in. The invocation was given by the Rev. C.J. Harrell, after which a trio made up of Mrs. T.E. Cheek, Mr. P.N. Constable and Mr. E.M. Howerton sang the song, "In His Name", written by H.W. Petrie. The poem "In Flanders Field" was read by by Mrs.W.W. Card, which was followed by a quartet made up of Mrs. Z.V. Gwynn, Mrs. D.W. Newsom, Mr. P.N. Constable and Mr. E.M.Howerton sang the song "I Heard A Voice" written by William Dressler. The Memorial Address was given The Hon. Victor S. Bryant. The audience sang "The Star Spangled Banner", after which the benediction was given.
