DURHAM, Dec 4 - This morning about 7:30 o'clock Policeman W.W. Austin committed suicide at his home on South street by shooting himself in the right temple with a 38-caliber Smith & Wesson pistol. The ball passed entirely through his head and came out just above the left ear, severing the temporal artery and several arteries around the base of the brain. Death resulted instantly. No immediate cause for the act is given, though from his wife it is learned that he had been drinking quite heavily for the past three weeks and it is thought that this had unbalanced his mind and that the deed was committed while he was temporarily insane. He leaves a wife and six small children, who were dependent upon him for their support. Mr. Austin also leaves an aged father and mother- Mr. and Mrs. I.S. Austin, who live at Lenoir. He said: "Tell mother that I love her yet, and that I did not go to do it," then grabbed the pistol, placed it to his head, and ended his life. He was on duty up to 7 o'clock last evening and his suicide caused a profound sensation. He has been a faithful officer for the past two years.
