Says He Was of Unsound Mind When Married

Sylvester Gray of Durham Has Started Suit for an Annullment of His Marriage - 
A Once Noted Character

Durham, Dec. 3 - Sylvester Gray, 23 years of age, who about two years ago had 
his name heralded throughout the United States and in many instances coupled 
with his photograph as the result of a faked story telling of a fortune 
aggregating more than $200,000 that had been unexpectedly bequeathed to him by 
the father of his "wife" who was dead, has started suit for annullment of his 
marriage to Mrs. Sadie Gray of this city.

In the complaint that is to be filed within the next few days, Gray, according 
to his attorney, will allege that when he married his wife, at that time a 
Mrs. Vickers and the mother of several children, that he was of "unsound" 
mind. It is said that Mrs. Gray will not contest the suit for marriage 
annullment.

Gray, who came to Durham as a country youth, and began his career as a Western 
Union messenger boy, was first to tell of his faked inheritance. In interviews 
that he gave to newspaper men he declared that when his ship came in, that he 
would attend some college and prepare him- attend some college and prepare him-
never came in.[sic]

Papers throughout the country carried the story and photograph and as a result 
hundreds of girls wrote Mr. Gray proposing marriage. Many of the girls sent 
their photographs. However, regardless of his opportunities for matrimony, Mr. 
Gray remained single, until some months later when he married Mrs. Vickers, a 
Durham widow.
