His Excellency Thos. Burke, Esq., Governor, Captain General and Commander in Chief in and over the said State. State of North Carolina. Whereas, a certain Daniel Stringer, of Edgecomb County, who had adhered to the enemies of the United States, obtained my permission, dated the ——— day of ——— , &c., to return to his allegiance to this State, and a promise of pardon for treasonable offenses previous to the said date, on condition of his joining any of the armed troops of the said State, and acting as becometh a good citizen and soldier, and producing a certificate thereof from the commanding officer; and Whereas, the said Daniel Stringer, hath produced a certificate from Col. Henry Hart, the commanding officer of a certain body of armed Troops raised in & for the defence of the said State of the said County of Edgecomb, that he had joined the said armed troops raised in the said County for the defence of the said State, against the enemies thereof; and also of his having, since his return to his allegiance, behaved and demeaned himself as becometh a good citizen and soldier, Wherefore, and in mercy and compassion to a citizen, who had been seduced from his allegiance to the said State by the artifices of the enemy and his emissaries, and who has, since his return to his allegiance, manifested by his behavior a sincere repentance for his former conduct, and a disposition to become a good and useful citizen; I have, therefore, thought fit, by virtue of the powers and authorities in me vested, to pardon, and I do by these presents, pardon the said Daniel Stringer for all treasons and misprisons of treason done or committed by him previous to the date of my said permission and promise of pardon; and the honorable the judges of the superior Courts of law, and all other officers, civil and military, of the said State, are hereby required to take notice of this pardon, and to govern themselves accordingly. BURKE TO JUDGE OF THE SUPERIOR COURT. Hillsborough, Apl. 11th, 1782. Sir: Inclosed is a pardon for a certain Daniel Stringer, of Edgecomb County, pursuant to a promise which I gave him in September last, but it is not to avail unless it shall appear to you that Coll. Henry Hart was the Officer who Commanded the Troops when he Joined, when they were in actual Service, or unless Such Officer, whoever he was, shall produce a Certificate to you agreeably to the purport of the promise, and the recitation in the pardon, Such being the Conditions of the promise.
