Of Edgecombe aforsd in the province of North Carolina Deposeth that the note of hand now produced signed by James Howell and bearing date the 17th day of October in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and thirty six was perfected by the said James Howell in presence of this deponent and that this deponent is a subscribing witness thereto and this deponent further deposeth that the said note was given for the balance of a greater sum which the said Howell owed Barnaby McKinne Junr to whom the said note was payable to for a tract of land the said McKinne sold to the said Howell lying & being between Whitehall Meadow and George Shorts and heard the said McKinne on his death bed say that he had sold the said tract to the said Howell but had not made the said Howell a title thereto, but had left it to him the said Howell by Will and that the aforesaid note of hand was given by the said Howell for the balance of the purchase money, and further this deponent saith not.
