 Historians disagree on the exact time of formation of Edgecombe County.  
Some say as early as 1732 and some say 1835 or later.  On March 16, 1732 
Governor Burrington granted a petition to form Edgecombe County and 
appointed twelve Justices of the Peace.  The General Assembly disputed 
the governors authority to form a county and apparently the dispute was 
not settled until about 1741.  Despite the dispute, Edgecombe Precinct 
deeds were recorded in deed books marked Edgecombe starting in 1732.

 The first six Edgecombe Precinct deed books are today located in Halifax 
County where the original Edgecombe County court was located.  They 
probably record land transactions in what today would be Edgecombe, Nash, 
Halifax, Franklin, Warren, the northern part of Wilson and parts of 
Granville, Orange and Martin Counties.

 Granville County was formed from Edgecombe in 1746, Halifax in 1758 and 
Nash in 1777.  The Edgecombe County boundary lines were changed often in 
the first years of the county.  Before 1855 land from Pitt and Martin was 
annexed to Edgecombe.  In 1855 Wilson Co was formed from land from Edgecombe, 
Nash, Johnston and Wayne.  Part of Edgecombe was annexed to Nash in 1871 and 
more land annexed to Wilson in 1883.
