Registry Book 10, pp.69 & 70 JOHNSTON, Amos to PHILIPS, William 1801 is important to STOKES researchers since it names John STOKES Sr and his two sons, John and William STOKES. Edgecombe County, North Carolina Registry Book 10, Pages 69 & 70: THIS INDENTURE made this 28th day of March in the year of Our Lord one Thousand eight hundred and one between Amos JOHNSTON of the county of Edgecombe and State of North Carolina of the one part, and William PHILIPS of the county and State aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Amos JOHNSTON for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred and fifty Silver dollars to him in hand paid by the said William PHILIPS before the Sealing and delivering of these presents the Receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged and himself trully satisfied, contented and paid Have Given, granted, Bargoned Sold, Alind Enfeosh and Confirmed & by these presents doth absolutely, Bargon and sell unto the said Philips his Heirs and Assigns forever One Certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the said county and State aforesaid and on the East side of JOHNSTONs Mill Swamp_ Beginning at a water Oak in the said swamp at said PHILIPS's upper corner, then along said PHILIPS live South to Dempsey STOKES' line to a corner pine in said line, then West along said STOKES line to a corner pine in said line, being the corner of the land took up by James SCARBOROUGH then North along the line of the land took up by said SCARBOROUGH to the old dividing line of the land that John STOKES Senr. gave to his sons John & William STOKES being the corner between the land said JOHNSTON bought of Joseph RUFFIN and the land he bought of Samuel RUFFIN Senr. then along the said old dividing line nearby a North course to the Line of the bog branch then down the said branch to the said Mill Swamp, then down the said Swamp to the first station_ including the land said JOHNSTON Bought of Samuel RUFFIN Senr. and James SCARBOROUGH_Containing by estimation two hundred and nineteen acres be the same more or less To have and to hold the said land and premises with the appertenances unto him the said William PHILIPS his Heirs and Assigns forever, and I the said Amos JOHNSTON myself my Heirs, Exrs. Admrs __(?) will forever warrant and defend the said land and premises unto him the said PHILIPS his Heirs Exrs. Admrs & Assigns clear and free from the lawful claim property or demand of all and every person or persons whatever.
