Edgecombe County, NC - Nell W. Davis to Mary & Gladys Wiggins, 1963 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ January 11, 1963 Dearest Grandmother and Gladys, I am having such difficulty beginning my letter for I keep thinking of the date – of how great and sad it is for all of us and yet how small in the rooster of eternal time. I can’t say how much I loved Granddaddy or how heartbroken I am since the call which came early this morning, but I do know with certainty that this one small day must be special in the eyes of God, for a great soul has returned to Him. We must see beyond our own great loss that this is for Granddaddy a happy and wonderful event for he is at last free from the body which we loved but which had become weak and burdensome to him. This is a joyous time in God’s company because Granddaddy was no ordinary person. I think that he successfully combined tremendous strength of character with mildness and wisdom and great understanding to live a magnificent life which was a joy and a light to all who knew him. I am humbly proud to be his grandchild and I wish that I could have in my makeup only a particle of his excellence. ****** Written by Nell Wiggins Davis, granddaughter of Frederick Lawrence Wiggins of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, who died January 9, 1963, in his home, located about two miles from Wiggins Crossroads, between Tarboro and Pinetops. "Grandmother and Gladys" refer to Mary Louise Rives Wiggins, wife of F.L., and her daughter, Gladys Rives Wiggins Gorham. ______________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
