Edgecombe County, NC - Elisha Pope Revolutionary War Record ~~~~~~~~~~ May 4, 1933 Mrs. Joseph Hayes Acklen Nashville, Tennessee Dear Madam: Reference is made to your letter of April 29, in which you request the records of Elisha Pope. Revolutionary War data furnished by this office are obtained from claims for pension and bounty land made to the United States, based upon military service of soldiers in that war. Elisha Pope was born in 1761 in what was then Edgecombe County, (state not named); the name of his parents are not shown. He was reared in Nash County, North Carolina. While residing in said Nash County, North Carolina, he volunteered sometime in 1781 and served a tour of three months, as private in a troop of horse in Captain Howell Ellen's company, Colonel Joseph I. Clinch's North Carolina regiment. Shortly after the expiration of this tour he served another tour of three months as a private in a troop of horse as a substitute for his brother, Dempsey Pope, in Captain John Bond's company, Colonel Joseph I. Clinch's North Carolina regiment. After the Revolutionary War the soldier moved into Wake County, North Carolina. Elisha Pope was allowed pension on his application executed August 24, 1833 while a resident of Wake County, North Carolina. He died August 18, 1858. No reference was made in the claim to wife or children. In 1833, soldier's brother, Dempsey Pope, was living in Wake County, North Carolina. Very truly yours, A.D.
