Transcribed by Sloan Mason Draper Manuscripts, Sumpter Papers VV Vol. 16 #0889220 p.125 Col. W. H. DAVIE goes to King's Mountain for relief of WILLIAMS State of N.C. Edgecombe County On this 25th day of Feb. personally appeared in open court before the Justices of the Court of Edgecombe Co. now sitting, James SCARBROUGH a resident of the County of Edgecombe, and State of N.C. aged as by record now in his possession, 84 years who first being duly sworn according to law doth on this oath make the following declaration in order. To obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. That he volunteered Under Col. Henry IRWINN and in the Company of Capt. Jonas JOHNSTON (day and date not recollected) in the capacity of Sergeant for the purpose of joining Gen. CASWELL at the time of the Scotch defeat at Moore's Bridge and served about 30 days. This second term of service he voluntered as a Captain to go to the assistance of the Virginians at the Great Bridge at the time that DUNMORE laid waste the country and caused Norfolk to be burnt, but did not reach there in due time for the engagement. He knew none of the officers except Capt. Henry Irwin TOOLE. He then returned to the N.C. Militia where he remained under the command of Col. Henry HART until discharged. In this tour he served 3 months. He knows of no living person by whom he can prove his services into his campaigning. He was commissioned By Gov. CASWELL of N.C., commission not to be found nor the date recollected. His 3rd term of service he volunteered As a Captain Commanded By Gov. CASWELL in July 1780 as appears from the commission. Field Officers Gen. Allen JONAS, Col. Henry HART, Lt. Col. BRANCH. He marched through different parts of this state and to a place on the border of S.C. called New Providence where he joined the Continental Army under the command of Brig. Gen. SMALLWOOD. He was then sent by Gen. SMALLWOOD to King's Mtn. In S.C. under Col. Wm. Richardson DAVIE to the assistance of Gen. WILLIAMS at the time of Ferguson's defeat at that place. He then returned to Smallwood's Head Quarters and in a few days he was sent by Gen. SMALLWOOD after some corn in the possession of the Tories near a fort situated on Crane Creek, S.C. and on his return from this expedition gave information of the weakness of the fort which soon after was taken by Col. Wm. WASHINGTON & Col. LEE under SMALLWOOD being the oldest Captain. He received the temporary commission of Major, though he volunteered For 3 months he remained in the army at that time until January making about 5 months. He happened in no regular battle and but one skirmish which was on his route to King's Mountain. He was discharged about the middle of January when he returned home. This campaign He is able to prove by the certificate of Micajah PETTAWAY who volunteered as a private under him. He then entered a private expedition against the Tories, which lasted about 1 month. His last time of regular service he volunteered as a Captain Commanded By Gov. CASWELL to meet the British at the time they invaded the country near Wilmington on his way he joined Col. SHEPHERD'S company of Militia in Kingston and then marched onto New River in Onslow County, N.C. Where he remained reconnoitering the country until his term of service 3 months was nearly expired when he returned to Edgecombe completed his term of service and was discharged. This last campaign was under the same command as the former, which I resigned about the last of November 1781 immediately after my discharge from the last expedition. He knows of no living person by whom he can prove this campaign. He was born in the County of Southampton, Va. The 29th day of November A.D. 1748 as of record now in his possession, Doth appear and was brought by his parents to Edgecombe Co., N.C. at 10 years of age where he has resided ever since. In all his expeditions he was commissioned By Gov. CASWELL of N.C. except the temporary commission of Major under Brig. Gen. SMALLWOOD. He served one regular term of 3 months as Sergeant and three terms as Captain, two of three months each and one of five months making in all eleven months.
