Mr. Savage had been visiting his brother, A.R. Savage, at the old home place for about a month when he was taken ill Monday morning, dying the following night. In July 1907, he married the late Miss Lucy Rawls, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William E. Rawls of Franklin and then came to Franklin to make his home where he served as express agent for 15 years. Afterwards he was employed by Lytton Manufacturing Co., and there he worked until 16 months before his death. While in Franklin, he acquired a host of friends who join with the family in their sorrow, and many will remember him for his kindliness and willingness to serve his community whenever he could. The funeral was held at his home in High Street Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock with the Rev. Roscoe Jones of the Methodist Church and the Rev. J. Sutherland-Watt of the Episcopal Church officiating. Miss Lessie Webb accompanied Mrs. J.S. Morgan of Suffolk, Mrs. Herbert Cobb and Misses Fanny Webb and Lizzie Mae Cutchin, who sang his favorite hymns, “Jesus Lover of My Soul,” “In the Sweet Bye and Bye” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” The active pallbearers were: J.L. Rountree, Rufus Futrell, W.F. Jones, T.A. Vaughan, Percy Vaughan, J.S. Morgan of Suffolk, Gus Grimes of Tarboro, N.C., and Dr. H.S. Thigpen of Scotland Neck, N.C. The honorary bearers were: E.G. Evans, Uriah Rawls, W.O. Bristow, C.H. Dougherty, W.M. Shafer, George R. Hayes, J.B. Gay, George H. Parker, E.T. Fitzgerald, George I. Earnest, Dr. R. H. Cobb and M. H. Moore. Surviving his are his three children, Miss Martha Savage of Boykins, Miss Mary Elizabeth Savage of William and Mary College and S.B. Savage, Jr. of Williamsburg, and a number of brothers and sisters who are: Mrs. Alfred White of Hobgood, N.C., Mrs. Joe Cherry of Speed, N.C., Mrs. John Wheeless of Spring Hope, N.C., Mrs. Robert Dale of Norfolk and Mrs. Howard Dixon of Rocky Mount, N.C., A.R. Savage and Austin Savage of Speed, N.C. Besides these of his immediate family, he is survived by a number of nieces and nephews in both Virginia and North Carolina. Interment was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
