Rocky Mount, Nov. 28 - When the crowd of Sunday afternoon loafers got wise to the fact yesterday afternoon that there was going to be a marriage at the Elkhorn cafe in a few minutes, it did not take long to attract a large attendance, most of whom were on hand to see if it really would occur, who the contracting parties might be, and who on earth would select such an unusual place for the performing of the nuptials. Not that the cafe was not one of the best in the city, but who on earth would select a Sunday afternoon and a prominent cafe in the city as a place for the plighting of their troth when the parsonages and the homes of the justices of the peace stood open to them? The crowd was present and what they had been called there for really occurred, and Miss Bessie Laddle and Mr. William Viverette were the contracting parties in the ceremony, which was performed by Capt. John Thorp of Edgecombe. From what could be learned, it was a runaway couple and there were parental objections upon the part of the girl's parents, who claim that she is not of marriageable age. The presented themselves in Nashville during the morning yesterday and asked for license and the parents were on hand and spoiled matters. They came to Rocky Mount yesterday afternoon and with the help of friends, the license was secured from Tarboro, an automovile having been called into use to make the trip to and from Tarboro. By appointment, the justice, the young lovers and the friends who had hied to Tarboro to get the license were to meet at the cafe at 5 o'clock and all hands were on time, and in a few moments, the young couple had said the words that made them man and wife. It is said the bride is a resident of Nash County and lives near the southern boundary of the county, near Elm City. The groom is a son of Mr. Josh Viverette of Cooper's township. On the marriage license the age of the groom was 20 years while the bride was put down as 19. Both of them looked to be about the ages that had been put down.
