I James Cain of the County of Edgecombe being very sick & weak in body but of perfect mind & memory thanks be given to god... I recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and for my body I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a Christian like manner... nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God ... Item I give & bequeath to my daughter Debah Cain one Negro wench called (Jive) & one Negro girl called Jive & one Negro boy Peter & one feather bed & furniture & five cows & calfs & also my bay riding mare to be possessed at eighteen years of age; Item To my daughter (something written but scratched out, illegible name over scratched name) I give & bequeath one Negro wench called Nan & one girl called Peg & one Negro girl called Dinah and one feather bed and furniture and one linen wheel to be possessed at eighteen years of age; Item to my daughter Elizabeth Cain I give and bequeath one Negro girl called Winnie & one Negro boy called Daniel and one feather bed & furniture and one linen wheel to be possessed with at the age of eighteen years of age; Item to my daughter Mary Cain I give & bequeath one Negro girl called Patt and one Negro boy called Jep & one feather bed & furniture and five cows & calfs and one linen wheel to be possessed at the age of eighteen years; Item to my son James Cain I give & bequeath the plantation and land where I now live containing 640 acres and half the ( ) survey and also a Negro boy called (Ben) a Negro man called (Gery) and my still and walnut table and one (great) pot and one great bible Y 10 head of cattle and one young mare and a feather bed and furniture; Item to my daughter Ann Cain I give & bequeath one Negro man called Tom and one Negro man called ( ) and one feather bed & furniture & two large pewter dishes and ten head of cattle to be possessed at the age of eighteen; Item to my son (Harde Cain) I give & bequeath the (mill) and plantation and a 160 acres and half my new survey and one Negro man called Simon and one Negro man (Priner) and also 10 head of cattle and one iron pot and a young mare; Item to my son Jacob Cain I give & bequeath a plantation and tract of land containing 200 acres lying on the Beaver Dam Swamp and a tract of land in Johnson County containing 320 acres and one Negro boy named Jack and 50 pds VA money to purchase him a bed and six pds VA money to buy some cattle and one iron pot and one rifle gun. There is a Negro man called (Sam) which if (Charles Daniel) after a fortnight try at ( ) to purchase him at the price agreed upon he is to pay the money to my executor if not the Negro & ( ) is to be returned as sold and all the rest of my movable estate to the highest bidder and then ( ) all my lawful debts to be paid and my three sons to have the ( ) and the rest of the money divided among my children. I likewise constitute make & ordain my brother in law Edward Moore and my brother in law William Walker my only & sole executors, signed James Cain, wit Charles Daniel, (Mison Weaver), David Phillips (X).
