Maarbjerg In the name of God Amen, I Alexander Cotten of the County of Edgecomb & State of North Carolina, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, tho, much afflicted do make and ordain this my last will & testament. 1st. I give & bequeath unto my daughter Mary Elizabeth Cotten, all of my parishable estate, that I am entitled to by the Will of Frederick Cotten, and also the following negroes/viz/ my man Moses, Solomon, Nelson, Susana & her increase, to her and to her heirs forever. 2nd. I give unto my Son Aurther Staten Cotten forty shillings. 3rd. It is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid out of the balance of my parishable estate & my land; & should there be an overplus after my debts are paid to be equally divided between my two children Auther Staten Cotten & Mary Elizabeth Cotten. I nominate and appoint my friends Randolph Cotten & Spencer D. Cotten executors to this my will & testament the 12th May AD 1823. A. Cotten (Seal) Signed, sealed & delivered in the presence of Spier W. Coffield Thomas Lyon Edgecomb County May Court 1826 The within last Will and testament of Alexander Cotten Ded’d. was exhibited in open Court for Probate & was proved by the Oath of Thomas Lyon one of the subscribing Witnesses thereto. Spier W. Coffield the other subscribing witness being dead – his hand writing was proved by Grisham C. Pitman who swore that he was acquainted with the hand writing of the said Spier W. Coffield & that he believed his signature to be in this the said Coffields proper handwriting. Spenser D. Cotten one of the Executors named in the said Will qualified thereto – Ordered that the same be certified & the Will recorded. Michl. Heamble(?) Clk.
