Petition of Mary Gay, widow of John Gay, dec’d. to lay off her dower lands, her husband died in 1829, intestate and possessed of a tract of land adjoining David Nolly, Aaron Proctor and others, heirs were Absalom Proctor & Letha, his wife, Jacob Proctor and Temperance, his wife, Piety Gay, Richard Gay, William Proctor and Mourning, his wife of full age and Polly Gay, Henry Gay, Richard Gay, Esther Gay and Nancy Gay, infants under the age of twenty one years. Petition of Mary Gay for years provisions states that Jacob Proctor and Richard Gay were appointed administrators at this term of court, Nov. Ct. 1829. Court order to Charles Barnes, Etheldred Cohoon & Meedy Williford together with Robert Barnes, Esq. to lay off to Mary Gay, widow of John Gay, dec’d. year’s provisions; Nov. Ct. 1829. Court order to lay off dower to Mary Gay, widow of John Gay, dec’d., adjoining the lands of David Nolly, Aaron Proctor and others, agreeable to petition of said Mary Gay; Nov. Ct. 1829. Commissioners laid off to Mary Gay, widow of John Gay, her dower lands, beginning at an ash in How Branch then up the said branch to nearly opposite the house then south 77 west 84 poles to a red oak on the side of the new road then south 37 poles to a hickory in David Nolly’s line then along said line south 88 east 94 poles to a gum at the fork of a branch then up the various courses of the south prong to a stooping maple then east 110 poles to a stake then north 125 poles to the beginning, containing 104 acres, including the house, outhouses, orchards & C. where the deceased most generally lived next before his death, 13 Jan. 1830, signed Joab (Proctor), M. Williford, Etheldred Cohoon (X), Peoples Hill (X), Robert Barnes, W.D. Petway, Hardy Flowers, Daniel Land, Samuel (Nov ), Bird Land, Orren D. Calhoon, (Garry Daughtridge). Years provisions laid off on 15 Dec. 1829, 2000 pds of pork, 36 barrels of corn, one beef cow, 12 pds. sugar, 10 gals. Molasses four bushels salt, 12 pds coffee, one hill of potatoes supposed to be about 25 bushels, four blade stacks, 200 pds seed cotton with a small quantity of flax, 10 gals brandy, one bed furniture, one wheel and cards, signed Charles Barnes, Etheldred Cohoon (X), M.
