Deceased also had a considerable personal estate and that she was lawfully joined to said William in his lifetime in matrimony and request that court appoint a commission to lay off her dower and share of the personal estate of William R. Gray; not dated. DOWER to Charlotte Gray, widow of William R. Gray, dec’d. Commissioners laid off tract beginning at a beach on the Tar River bank below the mouth of a small branch running south 153 poles to a pine The old corner then west 74 3/4 poles to the center of a red oak and post oak then north 24 west 252 poles to a hickory & a pine then north 92 poles to a stake in a field then north 36 ˝ east to the river a white oak then down the various courses of said river to the beginning, containing 264 acres also part of another tract called Narsworthy’s beginning at a pine in Henry Anderson line then running west 58 ˝ poles to a small red oak then north 346 poles to a pine in (Adam) Haywood’s line then east along the said line 96 ˝ poles to a hickory Adam Haywood’s corner then south 290 poles to a red oak & hickory then west 38 poles to a red oak then south to the beginning containing 197 acres, the two aforesaid tracts containing in the whole 461 acres including the dwelling house and all other out houses of the first tract, which we deem to be one third of all the land said Gray died seized and possessed of, 7 Feb 1797, Abner Pitman, Elijah Horne (mark), Daniel Ross, Abraham Evans (X), Isaac Battle, Josiah Battle, Jethro Battle, Noah Woodard, Elisha Horn, Joseph Armstrong, Wm. Horn, James Braswell, Surveyor. ORDER TO SHERIFF, whereas (South??) Donaldson by judgement of court recovered against Jacob Battle, administrator of all the goods and chattels of William R. Gray the sum of nine pound 10/6 by reason of the nonperformance of several promises of the said William R. Gray during his lifetime and also the sum of L2.6.6 for his costs and it appearing that said Battle has already distributed the which were of the said William R. Gray. Charlotte Jackson, wife of John J. Jackson is one of those who received and been paid her part which is suggested to be one third of total. She had given bond to cover any cost that arose from suits involving said estate and said Charlotte and John J. Jackson are to appear in court and to show cause why they should not be held liable for said debt, signed Edward Hale, CC. Made known to John J. Jackson on 14 June 1798.
