Edgecombe County, NC - Wills - Samuel Ruffin-1798 File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Carol Martoccia August 29, 1997 SAMUEL RUFFIN, 1798 (Son of Etheldred and Mary Haywood Ruffin) In the name of God Amen. I Samuel Ruffin being sick of body but of sound mind and disposing memory do make and ordain this my Last will and Testament in the following manner(viz) Item: My will and desire is that all my just debts shall be paid out of my Estate. Item: I give and bequeath unto my brother Henry John Gray Ruffin a negro boy named Dennis, and four hundred Dollars, the money whereof to be raised and gotten from the debts due on the medical Books of Doctor Haywood and myself (in co.) this money I want laid out by my Executors whom I shall hereafter name for the purpose of giving the Said Henry a liberal Educaation, to effect which my will and desire is that he the said Henry be first sent to W. Colwell? of Guilford County one year at least. My will and desire also is, that after four hundred dollars be obtainded as above mentioned the residue of the debts due on the Books as above before mentioned be divided equally between my Father Etheldred Ruffin and Doctor Henry Haywood. I give and bequeath unto my Brother William H. Ruffin all my wearing apparel with my saddle and bridle. I give and bequeath unto my Father Etheldred Ruffin all the remainder of my estate whatsoever. I do hereby make ordain and appoint my Father Etheldred Ruffin, Doctor Henry Haywood, and Lamon Ruffin my whole and entire Executors to this my Last will and Testament this 8th day of November 1798 Signed sealed and delivered in presence of R. Cotten Spencer D. Cotten Saml Ruffin D?. Haywood Dr Edgecombe County November Court 1798. The within __ will of Samuel Ruffin decd. was produced in open court approved by the oath of R. Cotten one of the subscribing witnesses thereto--who at the same time swore he saw Spencer D. Cotten the other subscribing witness subscribe to the said Will. Etheldred Ruffin Henry Haywood two of the executors therein named at the same time ___ Thereto agreeable to law--Ordered that the Will be Recorded Ethd. Ruffin and Henry Haywood qualified as Exec.
