The letter states that William Church and Charles Hamby, two young men, aged about 19 years each, were with several other young people at Patton Ridge school house when the two got into a row. After exchanging some warm words, Hamby threw a rock at Church. Hamby also drew his pistol and fired at Church, the ball taking effect in the breast. The wounded man was alive when the letter was written on the 28th, but little hope was entertained for his recovery.
