Educated in private schools at Franklinton, NC.
Entered railway service 1876 as telegraph operator and clerk to local agent 
Raleigh & Gaston Rd at Franklinton, NC, since which he has been consecutively 
1878 to 1880, extra man for relief agent to junction and coupon agencies and 
train dispatcher same road;
1880 to 1887, train conductor and relief dispatcher;
1887 to 1889, engaged in private business;
1889 to 1895, agent Seaboard Air Line at Durham, NC;
1896 to 1898, division freight agent same road at Atlanta, Ga.;
1898 to Aug. 1, 1905, assistant general freight agent same road at same place;
Aug. 1, 1905 to Apr. 1, 1907, general manager Durham & Southern Ry;
April 1, 1907 to Dec. 1, 1911, assistant general freight agent Seaboard 
Air Line Ry;
Dec. 1, 1911 to date, assistant freight traffic manager same road.
