Wright January 29, 1939 HISTORICAL SKETCH OF PEARCE BAPTIST CHURCH Following a revival meeting held at the old Pearce School - house in the spring of 1915, the Pearce Aminy Baptist Church was organized. W. D. Harrington and C. T. Plyborn conducted this meeting and led in the organization of the organization of the church on April 15, 1915. Thirty-nine members signed the covenant. However the records show that sixty-nine members transferred their membership from the Poplar Springs Church who are referred to as charter members. The first deacons were; J. R. L. Pearce, H. S. Pearce, W. J. Carter, H. K. Privette, Ed Arnold, and W. H. Privette. A. N. Pearce was elected sexton, and J. A. Ray and C. E. Pearce elected for ushers. On May 9, 1915 Mr. Harrington was called as first paster at a salary of $100. He served until July l, 1916 probably feeling that his work as organizer was finished. On September l, 1916, the church called Wallace Hartsell. For some reason not given in the records, his pastorate was a brief one. On January 27, 1917 he resigned to be succeeded by D.T. Bunn who led in the construction of the new church. It is not clear exactly when the church building was started, but according to Mr. S. G. Phillips the work was begun on 1917 and completed in 1918 at the approximate cost of $800- $1000. Mr. Phillips was overseer of this work; most of the material and labor was donated. (One acre of land was donated for the Church on January 22, 1918, by John C. and wife Lanora Jane Pearce, Deed recorded in Book 217, Page 440, Franklin County Registry) November 17, 1917, the name Aminy was dropped and the present name was adopted. The longest pastorate held at Pearce was that of J.F. Mitchiner who came in 1919 and served until 1929. His first salary was $200, raised to $325 in 1923 with an indefinite call. The following year the salary was raised to $450. During this period the church was well organized and was on the way to be a growing church. Charles B. Howard came as pastor in 1930 at a salary of $400. The church was hard hit by the depression. Mr Howard decided to return $100 of his salary to the church in 1931. During this period W. D. Amos was sexton for several years. It is reported that he would return his small salary to the church each year. At his death the church gave a cemetery plot as a token of appreciation for his services. Mr. Howard resigned July 9, 1933 and Homer Baker was called September 10, 1933. He served until Dec. 31, 1939. This was a period of expansion and reorganization for the church. The church roll was purged of inactive members, the board of deacons was reorganized to call for an annual election like the other officers. The church members that were out of fellowship were dealt with according to the New Testament teaching. The unified budget and the every member canvass were adopted in 1936. A storm nearly tore the church off its foundation in 1936, and plans were laid in September of that year to erect a new church. The church voted in February 1937 to build a new church. Work began January 1938 and was completed in 1939. Mr. Baker preached his farewell sermon the last Sunday in December 1939, the day the church was dedicated free of debt. W. Paul Childers was called as pastor June 1940 and served until October 1942 at a salary of $240. This was raised to $540. In 1942 and $600 in 1943. The church voted to join the Central Association in 1945. Mark Osburn began his pastorate at Pearce on February 7, 1943 and served until May 1945. There were few business meetings during this period, therefore few records are available. Albert Lamm was invited to hold a meeting at Pearces in July 1945 after which he was called as pastor. He served from September 1945 to October 1946. In January 1947 Mr. Blue was called as pastor. It was during this pastorate that additions were made on the Sunday School rooms. Sunday School attendance was very low during the summer of 1947 because of a severe polio epidemic. Mr. Blue resigned in August 1947 to attend business interest in Florida. On March 15, 1949 Albert Lamm accepted a call to come for his second pastorate at Pearces. The present church interior was completed in 1949 with a loan of $1500 from J. W. Perry, Sr. During the 1952 year the church added a balcony and vestibule, painted the interior, renovated the choir loft, put a new top on the church, installed bathrooms, and put carpet on the floor. July 15, 1953 Mr. Lamm resigned Pearce and Bunn churches to go to the West Oxford Baptist Church. He urged Pearces to go full time. The church called C. L. Capps, October of 1953 on a full time basis at a salary of $3000. It was voted on to move forward with a long-range program, which would include building a parsonage. On October l, 1953, Homecoming Day $2000 was raised to build a parsonage. Plans were voted on November 8, 1953 and $12000 was borrowed to complete this work. Mr. J. W. Perry, Sr. gave the brick, and several others donated labor. The land was given by, Jeff Pearce and family. The total cost of the attractive eight-room house was $18,142.45. After Rev Capps resigned May 1955. John Andes, a student at Southeastern Seminary was called as supply pastor. He resigned in August 1955. Warren Kerr was called in October 1955 and served until March 31, 1955. The School property was acquired Feb. 16, 1956 at the cost of $2000. Mrs. Hattie Stallings loaned $1000 for this purchase. The kitchen, ladies lounge, and nursery were put in during Rev. Kerr"s ministry. The pastor's salary was raised from $3600 to $4000. In April of 1959 a call was extended to Rev. Garland Foushee. During Rev. Foushee"s ministry there were several things begun in the church, which helped promote the growth of Chirist's kingdom. Major ones being the complete remodeling of the annex building, and the building of a breezeway connecting the church and annex.
