WHITAKER. (Minutes Of Halifax Co., NC, Court Of P & QS, August Term 1832.) ROBERT L. WHITAKER. (Minutes of Halifax Co., NC, Court of P & QS, August Term 1832.) On 21 August 1832, Robert L. WHITAKER (the 'L' I did not affix to my signature until sometime after I returned home from the army), a resident of Halifax Co, aged 67, made a declaration on oath in open court to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress of 7 June 1832. He "enlisted in the army of the United States in the month of July 1782 in Franklin Co, NC [to complete the term of service for 18 months, of a private named William HILL] in the company of Capt. [blank] commanded by Lt. Robert BELL in the Regiment commanded by Maj. HOGG in the NC Continental Line. Lt. Robt. BELL under command of Maj. HOGG marched our company from Warrenton, NC through Hillsborough; the battleground at Guilford Court House through Salisbury, Charlotte, from thence to Camden SC over the High Hills of Santee to the Battleground at Eutaw Springs, from thence to headquarters at the Ashly Hills on Ashly River in SC "when the Regiment was then commanded by Col. Archibald LYTLE, and my company by Capt. Benjamin CARTER and Lieut. or Ensign DICKSON, when I, with the rest of the privates, was furloughed until further orders or finally discharged, peace having been proclaimed in the camps. After that we were not called any more. With my furlough I obtained a certificate for between seventy and eighty dollars for part of my pay, signed by JACKSON and PIERCE, called 'Final Settlements' which I sold to a merchant for twenty dollars before the funding law was passed by Congress, the balance of my pay after the certificates were funded. I had no person to direct me where to apply and not knowing the amount I sold for ten dollars. That at the time of my furlough or discharge I had remained in the regiment and in actual service from the date of my first enlistment. That I was furloughed at or near St. James Island in SC when I returned home to Franklin County...There I remained until Feb. 1820 when I removed to Halifax County where I am now living." His name is not on the pension roll of any state, /s/ ROBT. L. WHITAKER [Test.:] M. H. PETTWAY Ck. The Court declare the applicant was a revolutionary Soldier.
