It was discovered that he had the smallpox, combined with bloody dysentery and he died Saturday, 7 Dec. Reuben Rogers had held a corn shucking the day after Mr Doyle arrived at his house, and there were present individuals from the families of Mr Wilson Bolton, Andrew Jackson and Dorson Geans, and nearly every person who came in to contact with him took the disease and it soon spread to the above named families. Over the next eight weeks 28 cases of small pox was treated: 6 cases at Boltons, 10 at Rogers, 4 at Jacksons, and 8 at Geans. Of those diseased 10 died: 1 at Boltons, 4 at Rogers, 1 at Jacksons and 4 at Geans to wit: Mr Reuben Rogers, his wife and son Absalom and daughter Arabella, Mrs Dorsey Geans, her son Norfleet and daughters Josephone and Mary, John Jackson and George W Dickerson a young gentleman at Boltons. The disease was considered no longer a threat ("entirely subsided") and the doctor (who had been quarentined from Louisburg and during the time of quarentine resided with Mr Wilson Bolton) was allowed to return to his home in Louisburg on Friday, 14 Feb 1873.
