He was born 17 May 1938, the son of the late Irey Leonard Gay (7 May 1908-29 Apr 1963) and Ruth King (18 May 1910-5 Dec 1988). He attended Louisburg College and graduated from North Carolina State University. He taught at Aycock School in Vance County and worked with the W.R Grace Chemical Company. He retired from Franklinton High School. He traveled to 113 countries, all 50 states, all the providences in Canada and visited 150 national parks. He vacationed at Lake Gaston for 38 years. He was a member of: Travel Century Club Little River Historical Society Carolina's Louis & Clark Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity and Traveler's Protection Agency He was the volunteer photographer for the Hopkins Fire Department Surviving: wife of 42 years, Marie Nicholson Gay; aunt, Dorothy Rhodes; two nephews and numerous cousins. Funeral services were held 5 May 2010 at Hopkins Chapel Baptist Church and he was buried in the church cemetery.
