His Estate Record file at the NC State Archives is quite thick as he died without leaving a will. An example follows: Application for letters of Administration. Franklin County, In the Probate Court. In the matter of the Administration of the estate of ABEL BOWDIN, Before R.H. Timberlake, Probat Judge. M. B. BOWDEN and J.L. BOWDEN being sworn doth say: That ABEL BOWDEN, late of said County, is dead, without leaving any will and testament; and that DELANY BOWDEN widow of the deceased is the proper person entitled to Letters of Administration on the estate of the said ABEL BOWDEN her husband(?) her right to adminstration & that the said M.B. & J..L BOWDEN sons of the deced. apply for such letters of administration Further, that the value of said estate, so far as can be ascertained at the date of this application, is about $1,500, and that JOHN A. BOWDEN of Brunswick Co. Va.; J. W. BOWDEN of Nash County, NC; M. B. BOWDEN; R.T.D. BOWDEN; WB BOWDEN; WH BOWDEN & wife MARY; J.L. BOWDEN; C. MONTGOMERY & wife EMERAIH; NANCY F. BOWDEN; T. V.
