Bessemer City, Jan. 24 - Mr. William Mitchem, a well known citizen of this 
place, after an illness of two days, died Friday at noon and was buried in 
Concord cemetery Saturday afternoon, Rev. J. Frank Armstrong conducting the 
funeral. Mr. Mitchem was 79 years of age and for nearly thirty years had been 
totally blind. He served with distinction throughout the civil war. M. Stroup, 
M. Kyser, J.T.R. Damron and John Costner, surviving soldiers of the 
Confederacy, acted as pallbearers.
