Gates County, NC - John D Pipkin to Gov Wm A Graham, 1845 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gatesville NC July 12th 1845 His Excellency Wm A Graham My dear Sir I have been called upon by Capt Nazareth Liggett of the Cossack Guard, a Corp of cavalry in the County of Chowan, which is attached to my Brigade, to draw a Bond for the arears of said Company. I have taken his Bond and as they and I cheerfully say that I consider the Bond amply sufficient - my certificate is appended to the bond - I am sure the Arms would not be more safely kept or more honourably used by any than the gentlemen named, and I feel gratified that such a military spirit is displayed among the young men of my Brigade, and I am sure the interest of the Militia will be greatly promoted in the organization of such companies - our militia system is clearly defective and any spirit of this kind will have I think a salutary effect in its promotion I am your Ob'd Serv't Jno D Pipkin Brig Gen 18th Brigade NCM I am pleased to say this company is a band of pure young Whigs To His Excellency Wm A Graham Governor &c Raleigh [Gov Wm A Graham Papers] July-Sep 1845 ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
