MILES DERBY Mrs. Nannie B. Derby, 65, wife of J.P. Derby and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Miles of Southampton County, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G.H. Duck, at Phoebus, Sunday night. Though she was in failing health for several years her death came as a shock to her family and friends, Mrs. Derby having left Sunday for a visit with her daughter in Phoebus. Besides Mrs. Duck she is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Charles Derby of Gates, N.C.; five sons: Rev. Luther Derby of Hampton, Rev. Edward Derby of Montvale, Virgil Derby of Handsom, Carson Derby of Richmond and J.P. Derby, Jr. Petersburg; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Emmett and Milton Miles of Handsom; three sisters, Mrs. Pugh Holland and Mrs. Lulu Holland, both of Handsom, and Mrs. Catherine Britton of Portsmouth, besides a large family connection in the county. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from New Hope M.E. Church by her pastor, the Rev. C.F. Moseley, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Vaughan of Gates County. The choir sang “Safe in the Arms of Jesus,” “Haven of Rest” and “Have Thine Own Way.” Pallbearers were J.T. Bryant, L.L. Bryant, J.W. Bryant, S.S. Bishop, W.M. Worrell and V.K. Daughtrey. Interment was made in the family cemetery at the home of Milton Miles, near the church. The casket was covered with white carnations, lilies and ferns. The sympathy of the Handsom community goes out especially to the husband, who has been a patient in Veterans Hospital at Phoebus for eight years.
