DOROTHY INEZ HARRELL "Smithfield (VA) Times," Vol. 13, No. 11, June 16, 1932, p. 3, col. 4 LIGHTNING KILLS NANSEMOND CHILD Dorothy Inez Harrell, 10, Victim of Bolt; Negro Rendered Unconscious SUFFOLK, June 6. - Dorothy Inez Harrell, 10 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Preston Harrell, living on the Hosier road, was struck by a bolt of lightning this afternoon during a severe rain and electrical storm and instantly killed. As it began to rain, the child seized an umbrella and a small tub and said she was going to fill the tub with rain water. She ran out of the back porch and set the tub near the eaves and darted back into the porch. As her mother stood, holding open the wire door, the fatal flash came, enveloping a sycamore tree in the yard and the child on the steps in white fire. Mrs. Harrell, who stood holding the door, three children on the porch, and a pet dog were unhurt. Mrs. Harrell saw the electrical fire as it played about the girl, who crumpled on the steps. She seized the little girl and began to give help artificial respiration. Help came quickly, and Dr. D.R. Yates, summoned to the Harrell home, rushed to the spot, but too late to save Dorothy. Mrs. Harrell said that as she lifted the child into the house, she looked out in the yard to see a negro, working on the place, lying on the ground. He had been stunned by the bolt which killed the little girl. Later he regained consciousness and dragged himself to the house to try to give what aid he could. It was an hour before he fully recovered the use of his limbs. Dorothy Inez is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Preston Harrell; a brother, Brinkley Harrell, and two sisters, Alma and Helen Harrell.
