Louis Powell Mathias, Jr., 70, of the 1300 block of NC 32N, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk. Mr. Mathias was born in Corapeake, Gates County, N.C., on March 29, 1933 to Louis P., Sr. and Erma Lee Polson Mathias. A graduate of Sunbury High School in the class of 1952, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served for four years. On Dec. 24, 1958 he married the former Louise Bryant and together they raised three children. For 46 years, he worked with Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock and also during part of that time he owned and operated Mathias Florist. An active member of Eureka Baptist Church, he had served as a deacon, was a member of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class where he had been the secretary and treasurer, had served on the building and grounds committee, the cemetery committee, the parsonage committee, and in the church choir. A former Boy Scout leader, he was a charter member of the Corapeake Ruritan Club, served as its chaplain and received its first “Ruritan of the Year” award. A respected ballplayer and fan of all sports, his talents could be seen in everything ye did from carpentry, fishing, hunting, to mechanic work and gardening. A devoted husband, Daddy and Granddaddy, he will best be remembered as a loving friend to all. Surviving are his wife, Louise Bryant Mathias; his daughter, Debbie M. Eure of Corapeake; his sons, Mark Mathias and wife Tracie of Dalton, GA., and David Mathias of Sunbury; his sisters, Margaret M. Dale of Corapeka and Eunice M. Carr and husband Ivan of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren. Jessica and Charlie Eure and Aaron, Nicholas and Courtney Mathias. Also surviving are his special friends, Chuck Perry, Coochie Turner, Vance Bright and Tom Ward. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Eureka Baptist Church by the Rev. Cameron Currin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and all other times at the residence.
