But it is the last memento inscribed to the soldier that affords a solace to kindred and friends, that sounds a requiem, the roll call of comrades in arms and seals his name in the ashes of his country. Such has elicited the dedication of this tribute to the memory of JACOB J. POWELL, who fell a victim to death, amid the fierceness of the clash of arms, at Cold Harbor, Va., a North Carolinian -- a volunteer at the commencement of the American Revolution in 1861. Energetic, chivalrous, discreet, courageous, virtuous, intellectual, noble and brave ... He acquitted himself to the pleasure of his commandants, to the honor of his own position and his country's cause. A FRIEND Additional Comments: Note: According to American Civil War Soldiers, Jacob Powell of Gates, North Carolina served with Company H., 5th Infantry Regiment, North Carolina (Confederate) Troops.
