Russell, 85, died at his home Thursday at 1:20 a.m. after a long illness. He was the sons of Albert King and Mrs. Francis Collins Russell. He was a lifelong resident of Gates County and a retired farmer. He was a member of Savage’s Methodist Church, of which he was the oldest member and served as steward and treasurer for many years. He was active in the political affairs of Gates County and was a member of the County Board of commissioners for 10 years. He also served as deputy sheriff and commissioner of revenue. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Odessa White Russell; two sons, B.W. Russell of Suffolk and Surry L. Russell of Disputanta; five daughters, Mrs. Carrie Nichols, Mrs. J.M. Rountree and Mrs. W.C. Howell, all of Suffolk, Mrs. R.W. Nixon Sr., of Courtland and Mrs. Harry Butler of Franklin; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Dorothy White Brinkley of Suffolk; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. A funeral service was conducted at Savage’s Methodist Church Sunday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. W.E. Pickett, pastor; the Rev. R.E. Bittle, pastor of the Bethlehem Christian Church, and the Rev. K.E. Bryant, retired pastor of Cool Springs Baptist Church. Burial was in Savage Church Cemetery.
