He was born to the late Arthur and Althea Omega Vann on July 17, 1913. He was the seventh child out of this union of eight. He accepted Christ at an early age. He joined and worked in the New Piney Wood Chapel in Drum Hill N.C., where he was President of the Usher Board. In support of his wife Maggie Vann's vision to obey God and build a church, he joined her as co-founder of Ebenezer Gospel Church #3. He was retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company where he was employed for thirty-five years. He was married to the late Maggie (Boyd)Vann. Out of this union, six children were born: three daughters, Mary (Vann) Irvin, Audrey (Vann) Eure both of Gates, N.C. and Cherry (Vann) Riddick of Prospect, Conn; three sons, the late Nathaniel Vann, Thessalonians Lee Vann formerly of Washington, D.C. and Mithell R. Vann of Durham, N.C.; twelve grandchildren, ten greatgrandchildren, lots of nieces, nephews and cousins. Lee Vann was involved in several community activities in Gates County.
