Gates County, NC - Will & Estate Recoreds File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Vera Burnham Will of Sarah Dunn 1779, proven in court 1786 In the name of God Amen I, Sarah Dunn, of the State of North Carolina and County of Gates, being of sound and perfect mind, sense, and memory, blessed be God for the same. And calling to mind the uncertainty of this mortal life, and knowing that it is appointed for all once to die, do therefore make, and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say ; I give and recommend my soul into the hand of God that gave it in hopes of joyful resurrection. and my body to the earth to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner, and as for what worldly goods it has pleased God to bestow upon me. I give the same as in manner and form following. Viz ; First, I give and bequeath unto my beloved husband, George Dunn, two negro boys the one named Miles, and the other named Daniel. Also Ten head of cattle, two feather beds and furniture, one chest. I say to him the said George Dunn his heirs and assigns forever. I give and bequeath unto my beloved daughter, Catherine King, one negro girl named Miriam, she and her increase. Also ten head of cattle, one feather bed and furniture, two tables, two chests. I say to her my said daughter Catherine King to her heirs and assigns forever. I lend to my beloved husband George Dunn, two negro men the one named Ben and the other named Tom and also one negro woman named Morning. I say to him the said George Dunn for and during the term of his natural life and after his decease to my beloved daughter Catherine King they and she and her increase. I say to her my said daughter Catherine King to her and her heirs and assigns forever. But and if she the said Catherine King should die without heir of her body, then the said negroes they and she and her increase, I give unto my neice, Sarah Skinner, daughter of Jesse Skinner I say unto her, the said Sarah Skinner her heirs and assigns forever. And lastly I constitute, nominate, appoint, and ordain, George Dunn and Catherine King, Executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former or other wills by me made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the tenth day of April in the year of our lord one thousand and seven hundred and seventy nine Signed, sealed, published, and declared to be the last will and testament of the said Sarah Dunn in the presence of us who have hereunto subscribed our names as witness in the presence of the testator and each other. Inferior Court of Pleas and quarter sessions 1786 The within will was exhibited into court by Catherine Benton, Executrix therein appointed and was proved by the oath of James Knox one of the subscribing witness thereto. Then the said will was ordered to be recorded at the same time the said Executrix came into court and qualified herself for that office and prayed an order for letters and testamentory, thereon what was accordingly granted. And is recorded in Book A, Tolis ? 55 & 56 State of North Carolina. By the Justices of the County Court of Pleas and quarter Sessions, for the County of Gates It being certified unto us that Sarah Dunn late of Gates County is dead, and hath made and put her last will & testament in writting, a copy of which is hereunto announced and therein hath appointed George Dunn and Catherine King, Executors, Executrix, the said Catherine Benton formerly Catherine King after qualifying herself to the said will, prayed an order for Letters, Testamentory thereon the same was accordingly granted. Witness ; Lawrence Baker, Clerk of the said Court at Gates County, the 25th day of Febuary in the 10th year of the independence of the said State and in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty Six Lau.
