Glasgow County, NC - Colonel John Shepperd Murders Brother, 1800 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From the Raleigh Register Weekly, Tues., Jan 28, 1800 "A report is in circulation; nor have we any reason to doubt its authenticity, only that its attrocious nature makes it scarcely credible; that on Thursday sen' [sic] night Colonel John Shepperd, murdered his brother by striking him on the head with an axe at the house of Robert White, Esqr. in Glasgow County. The only extenuating plea that we have heard charges both brothers with being intoxicated. Drunkenness is an inlet to every other vice, and the man that is habituated to it, can give no security for the perfomance of any duty, or any hopes of his exemption from any crime; 'Oh that men should put a thief into their heads, to steal away their brains.'
