He was a son of Jacob Bledsoe, Sr. who was of prominent old line Virginia lineage. Lewis Bledsoe was born on December 15th, 1756 at his father’s plantation on Sandy Creek in Bute, now Warren County, North Carolina. While Lewis was but yet a small child his father moved the family moved to what is now Wake County. Some years later, the year being 1810, the Captain and Mrs. Bledsoe relocated their family to Granville County, and remained here until their untimely demise. Lewis Bledsoe was married to Frances Moore on December 5th in the year of our Lord, Anno Domini 1780. His wife was more affectionately known as “Fanney”. Fanney Moore Bledsoe was born on February 6th, 1766 and lived for more than seventy years, dying in her old age. During the Revolutionary War Lewis Bledsoe felt the effectual call and rallied to the Patriot cause. At the time of his enlistment he was then a resident of Wake County. Upon entered into service he enlisted as a Private, but as a result of his outstanding service he was soon promoted to Sergeant. His career continued to elevate and he was eventually made Captain under the command of Col. Moore who was of the North Carolina line. He served his country well, and as a result of his undying devotion and service, he was later granted a pension in his old age. Captain Lewis Bledsoe departed this life on June 27th, 1833 at the ripe old age of 76 years, 5 months and 12 days. His widow, Fanney, survived him for several years. To them, eleven children were born, all of whom where upstanding citizens in their own rights. These children were as now follows: The first born was Yancey Bledsoe, who was born on November 30th, 1781. Those to follow were: Zincey Bledsoe, who was born April 7th, 1784; Terrell Bledsoe, born May 10th, 1786; Gechoniah Bledsoe, born July 31st, 1788; Mahala Bledsoe, born on September 30th, 1790; Mikins Bledsoe, born February 15th, 1793; Becky Bledsoe, born May 1st, 1795; Thurza Bledsoe, born December 31st, 1798; Washington Bledsoe, born December 21st, 1801; Alice Bledsoe, born June 4th, 1804; and finally the last child was Amanda Bledsoe, who was born January 13th, 1806. Mere words cannot relay the lasting effects that this Bledsoe family had on the county as well as the nation. Not only were they prominent in their communities, but it can be said that Captain Lewis Bledsoe, through leadership in his military service, was one of the builders of this great nation.
