GRANVILLE COUNTY, NC - CENSUS - Emery/Emory Chronology ----¤¤¤¤---- Prepared by Harold A. Lloyd War Records ca. 1778 John Emery and Edmund Emery joined Capt. Benjamin Wade's Company No. 6 under the 1778 Assembly Act. John Emery was a planter, 22 years old, 5 feet 9 inches high, pale looking with brown hair and walked "with a little stooping." Edmund Emery was also a planter, was 19 years old, 5 feet 9 inches high, had dark hair and a swarthy complexion. This would give Edmund a birth year of around 1759. If William was 16 in 1800, he was close to 21 in 1804 and thus listable at that time. Perhaps William is not mentioned in the 1825 estate because he had died by 1825? Based on Lewis’s age given in the 1850 Wake Census, he would appear to old to be Edmund’s son and perhaps they are brothers. 1800 Tax List Dutch District Edmund Embry (sic) 700 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) Lewis Embry (sic) 0 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) 1801 Tax List Dutch District Lewis Emmory* 100 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) Edmund Emmory 600 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) Note: Since Edmund’s acreage is reduced by the same number acquired by Lewis, presumably Lewis’s land came from Edmund. 1802 Tax List Dutch District Edward (sic) Emory 600 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) Lewis Emory 100 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) 1803 Tax List Dutch District Edmond Emory 600 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) Lewis Emory 100 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) 1804 Tax List Dutch District Lewis Emory 100 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) William Emory 0 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) Edmond Emory 706 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) 1805 Tax List Dutch District Lewis Emory 100 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) Edmond Emory 706 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) William Emory 0 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) Martha Emory 116 acres/0 poll(s)/0 slave(s) 1807 Tax List Dutch District Edmund Emry 560 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) Lewis Emry 100 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) 1808 Tax List Dutch District Edmon Emery 616 acres/1 poll(s)/1 slave/black poll(s) Lewis Emery 216 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) 1809 Tax List Dutch District Lewis Emry 100 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) Edmund Emry * 616 acres/0 poll(s)/0 slave(s) Martha Emry 116 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) *Note: Edmund is now presumably over 50 years old since no polls are now listed for him. According to the Granville Apprentice Docket, Phoebe Murphy (age 6) was apprenticed to Edmond Nov. 1819 and Phoebe Murphy (age 12) and Malinda Arnold (age 7) were apprenticed to Eliz. Emory, Rutha? Emory, Wiley Emory, Caroline Emory and William Emory. 1846 Tax List (Beaverdam Only Reviewed) Beaverdam John Emory 307 acres/0 poll(s)/0 slave(s) William Emory 0 acres/1 poll(s)/0 slave(s) Note On Ages: White men under 21 and, beginning in 1801, over the age of 50 were exempted from poll taxes. Beginning in 1817 this upper limit was lowered to 45. Ages can thus be calculated based on this formula. Tax lists are often incomplete as comparisons with census shows. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
