 1851 Clerk Of Superior Court's Affidavit On Missing Granville Marriage Bonds

The following affidavit is a part of the War of 1812 bounty land application
filed by Johnson Loyd's widow Elizabeth Langford Loyd.  For those who have
searched in vain for an early Granville marriage bond, this affidavit may
provide an explanation.   It  shows that early Granville marriage bonds were
already missing by 1851 and attempts to explain why.  Because of the loss of
Elizabeth Langford Loyd's bond, she had to rely on individuals' affidavits
proving her marriage.  The affidavit is transcribed as written with errors not
corrected.

Dear Sir

	By your request I have examined the marriage Bonds filed in my office 
from the year 1790 to the year 1806 for the marriage Bond of Johnson Loyd and 
Elizabeth Langford and failed to find any such Bond   the marriage Bonds from 
1780 to 1800 were not all returned to this office as the Clerk himself lived 
some 12 miles from the Court House and Blank licenses were Kept in different 
parts of the County by the Justices of the Peace

				Of office at office in Oxford
				The 21st November 1851
