Fortunately, I discovered that someone else had already done the hard work, not only of fully transcribing the will and related documents, but of analyzing its import and providing some context for the contents, here (provided with the owner's permission): http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tmark/RichardDavisWill.html What follows, therefore, is just an abstract of the will, to serve as a quick reference and to point the way to the much more thorough and informative treatment linked above. In the name of God amen. I Richard Davis of Cariline County.... [Richard apparently wrote the will while still living in Caroline County, Virginia and then dated, signed and had it witnessed after moving to Granville County]. Item - lends to wife (not named) all real and personal estate during her widowhood; if she remarries this is to be divided equally among his children. Item - lends to daughter Keziah Devnport a slave named Lucie and her increase, all to be given after Keziah's death to her bodily heirs. Item - lends to daughter Patience Tynes a slave named Judy, and if Judy has a child this child to be given to his granddaughter Levinah Davis. Lends to daughter Patience a slave named Isbel, if Isbel has a child the child to be given to his granddaughter Jeriah Tynes. Slaves Judy and Isbel to be given to bodily heirs of Patience after her death. Item - lends to daughter Sophia Yancy a slave named Ann, after Sophia's death to be given to her bodily heirs. Item - gives to son Augustine a slave named Wiser toward maintaining the 3 sons of Richard's deceased son Gideon, and gives to Augustine and his heirs a slave named Winser. Item - gives to son Cyrus and his heirs a slave named Doll. Item - gives to son Solomon Davis and his heirs a slave named Peter. Item - slave Myner to be sold to highest bidder among Richard's children but not to be sold outside of family; designates how the proceeds from this sale are to be distributed/used for Gideon's three sons. Item - ten pounds to be paid to son Absolom Davis "for land I now live on" as Absolom has had his part in land. Item - Gives the land and plantation where he now lives to grandson Richard Davis and his heirs. Item - all other estate "houses stof stock catel hogs and hors flesh" to be valued and sold but not until after his wife's death. Designates that the money over and above that he previously stipulated for Gideon's three sons and Absolom be equally divided between daughter Jeriah Terry, son Zachariah Davis and Mary Consolea (?). Designates that the county court "shall not be consarned" with his will, only put it on the record. Names sons Augustine and Absolom Davis his sole executors. Date signed 16 June 1760?
