According to the Book "the Heritage of Vance County", John Taylor (1696-1780) m. Catherine Pendleton ( 1699-1774 / and they settled at "Macpelah" about 1754. It is still in the Taylor family, though not as large a property holding now as it was then. I have been to "Macpelah" and have seen the cemetery. Many of the graves are not marked but some are. I made a diagram of the cemetery and then obtained a copy of a diagram done in 1838 by Memucan Hunt. Many of the ones he listed are not on my list either because the stones have been destroyed/knocked down or there were no stones. Some on his list probably came from family Bible references, etc., not from stones Macpelah, which is located on the road that turns left off highway 39N at Williamsboro, in Vance County. Much has been written about this old plantation and it's owners. ********************** Will of Charles Lewis Made April 9, 1791 Granville County, North Carolina In the name of God, Amen. NC Burial: Macpelah Cemetery1 Father: Thomas Beverly Anderson (<1715-1780) Mother: Sarah Clark Misc. Notes Among those papers was a drawing of Macpelah Cemetery which is south of Townsville, North Carolina. Charles Lewis and his wife, Mary Anderson are buried there. Also, Elizabeth Taylor, mother of Charles Lewis and Elizabeth's second husband, William Bullock are buried there as well as a few other Taylors, Andersons and John Penn, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. 1 ( no, John Penn is buried in Oxford, N. C. under a Revolutionary monument ) Sara, My wife just looked in the Bible and found that the "Cave of Machpelah" was the burial place of Abraham's family. According to a copy of a page out of a book that Andy Davis sent (she did not record the name of the book), James Taylor built a home south of Townesville about 1860 and named it "Macpelah". I assume that the name came from the biblical reference. Macpelah Cemetery is next to the site of the old home which burned about 1880. The book says that E. O. Taylor rebuilt the home. I am going to the library tomorrow and I will look again for any references to the Macpelah Cemetery. I have looked before without any luck. John B. Lewis J.
