Granville County, NC - Will of Jane Sneed, 1813 Background: Jane Sneed of Person County, NC is the widow of Capt. Samuel Sneed (1723-1806). Her husband’s will divided most of their jointly held estate, but before her death Jane wrote the below deed of gift which is found in the Person County will book. Jane is the daughter of Thomas Dudley, who settled in Amelia County, Virginia around 1768 from Caroline County. Jane probably married Samuel in Caroline County before settling in Granville County. She is named in the will of her brother William Dudley of Nottoway and also found mentioned in marriage records of her sister in Amelia County. The daughter, Susanna, named in the will, is in fact Susannah Redd Sneed, widow of Jane’s son John Sneed and daughter of John Redd and his wife Catherine Sneed. John and Susanna lived with Jane on the Sneed home farm on the Flat River and John Sneed’s early death left Susanna with a large family to support. Jane and her husband Samuel Sneed raised a large family described in the background of Samuel’s will posted elsewhere. The inventory of Jane’s estate was taken in 1813, indicating her death. By that time, she had 582.5 acres and 35 enslaved workers. Though she “marks” this deed of gift, a note in her hand survives in the Philip Moore Papers, indicating she was literate.
