Granville County, NC - Will of Samuel Sneed, 1806 Background: Capt. Samuel Sneed (1723-1806) was born in Virginia and settled in Granville County, NC by 1761. He is believed to be connected to the Sneed family found in Caroline County, Virginia. He married Jane Dudley (died c1821) daughter of Thomas Dudley of Caroline and Amelia Counties of Virginia. Samuel Sneed acquired large land holdings in the Island Creek District of Granville and later settled in Caswell County along the Flat River in that part of Caswell that became Person County. Samuel farmed this land with slave labor numbering 15 to 35 people. The couple had issue, all believed to be by Jane Dudley: Emily Sneed (died c1803) wife of William Ragland who settled in Elbert Co., GA; Stephen Sneed (1756-1821) married Mary Williams; Hannah Sneed (died by 1814) married Samuel Farrar Williams who moved to Henderson Co, KY; Philip Sneed who married Jemiah Ann Mitchell and settled in Salisbury, NC; John Sneed (died c1808) married his cousin Susannah Redd, Nancey Sneed (1766-1822) married Daniel Gooch of Granville Co, NC; Dudley Sneed (died c1810); Col. Thomas Sneed (1772-1825) married Anne Parker; Lemuel Sneed (died 1825) married his cousin Elizabeth Redd. The Redd sisters are daughter of Catherine Sneed Redd, believed to be Samuel’s sister. Stephen, Thomas and Dudley all served in the American Revolution and Dudley received land located in Georgia, where he and his descendants settled. Jane Dudley Sneed survived her husband and left her own will dated May 25, 1813. She also left one document in her hand found in Philip Moore Papers in the Southern Historical Collection at the University of NC at Chapel Hill.
