Wayne County, NC - William Sherard Bible & History ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WILLIAMS SHERARD BIBLE AND HISTORY There is a copy of the original Bible at the DAR but it is so poor I decided not to transcribe it. Marguerite W. Whitley recently sent another copy of the Bible, equally poor, and a family history written by Dr. Hugh Buckner Johnston based on the Bible Records. Dr. Johnston included additional information including estate settlement. This is what Dr. Johnston did but some of the names in the Bible although the same, are poorly spelled which was common at the time. There are four pages of the Bible in addition to the front page. One page is a record of slaves which Dr. Johnston appears to have incorporated into the slave estate records. Dates that I can see in the Bible are followed by *. The New Testament of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ translated out of THE ORIGINAL GREEK and with THE FORMER TRANSLATIONS DILIGENTLY COMPARED AND REVISED. Cooperstown (N.Y.) Published by H. & E. Phinney, 1831 Sherard, Sherrard, or even Sherrod, is an old and respected surname in Wayne County, North Carolina, and undoubtedly descends from John Shearer or Sherrer who resided towards the last quarter of the Seventh Century in Isle of Wight, Virginia.
