It is now on private land near Greensboro, Alabama in Hale County. At time of his death he lived in Perry County, Alabama but lived closer to Greensboro, Alabama which was in Greene County, Alabama. Parts of Greene, Perry, Tuscaloosa and Marengo Counties of Alabama were taken to create Hale County in 1867. This creation put Thigpens, Meeks and others living in these areas and their burial grounds in Hale County without ever having to move. At one point in time this was a large cemetery with many tombstones. Over the last 100 + years the timber has been cut and sold and each time the timber was cut more tombstones disappeared. Today the only tombstone in the cemetery is that of J.W.T. Meeks, b. 3 June 1831, d. 30 March 1907-should be 1906. The cemetery is on a 40 acre tract and has been sold to a company...and they have assured us they will protect the cemetery. I have copy of his (J.W.T. Meeks) obit from the GREENSBORO WATCHMAN dated Thursday, April 5, 1906. The older family members stated "there were lots of tombstones there when Wiley was buried". All of the older ones are all dead now. James Wiley Thomas Meeks was g-grandfather of my husband Louis Thigpen. Our next project is to have J.J. Thigpen Sr & others grave marked so they will not be lost to future generations. **Note-Joseph David Thigpen b/d 4-3-1785, & John Nathan were twins. J.J. Thigpen Sr & Susannah had TWO set of twins. Joseph Joshua Thigpen, JR (twin) b. 9 Jan 1790 Greene Co., formerly Dobbs Co.), d 1834, Louis's g-g-grandfather Thigpen. For some reason J.J. JR was NOT listed in the above records. Oliver Thigpen, b/o J.J. JR, was administrator of their father's estate and he (Oliver) named by name the children of J.J. Thigpen Sr and Susannah, Perry County Minutes of Orphans Court, Book B, p. 268, August Tern 1836. ***Note-Amos G.Thigpen, twin of J.J. JR, d November 1852 (NOT 1856) in Lauderdale Co., Alabama. I did have copy of his estate papers, but I gave them to one of his descendants that helped me to bring that line up to date. Child # 4 Keziah (Thigpen) MEEKS (have her death if needed), Keziah and Newman Meeks were g-g-grandparents of Louis, my husband, and they were parents of James Wiley Thomas Meeks. ***Note-Clarissa Thigpen married John "D" Walker (marriage record show John D. Walker, NOT "W" as shown above). I have children named by name for all of them except for Michael & Rachel S. (Thigpen) Fields and John D. & Clarissa (Thigpen) Walker. I have marriage dates, when & where for all except Michael & Rachel. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
