DIXON – aged 21 March 1823 For Himself – time is money I commence work with my Father & work 4 months at $8 per month – first start for myself August 1823 – I commence going to school to Mr. Read in Edgecombe continued 5 months January 1824 – I commence teaching school at the Albritton’s School house with 15 pupils kept one quarter school April 19th 1824 – I moved to Obed Dixons and commenced Teaching School at the Rainbow Meeting House with 21 pupils and kept 1 qtrs in the meeting House. The number of pupils increase – my employer build a school House in order to continue the school during cold weather Nov. 25th 1824 – I resumed the school and continued 4 quarters with a prosperous school, only giving 2 weeks vacation at the expiration of each quarter (then 1 month in which I went to Raleigh) This comes to the date Nov. 1825 Account of time A. Journal Wins Dixon – January 2nd 1826 I resumed Teaching at the same place, and continued 3 quarters with only giving 3 weeks vacation and closed my school Oct 5th 1826 I kept 9 quarters or 2 years and 3 months school at the Rainbow meeting House aver perhaps pr qt $100 (No 112 different students) – Boarded 2 years and 3 months at Obed Dixon at $4 per month I move to Sandy Run the 6th Oct 1826 November 15th I purchase two negroe girls of Mr. Gibbons for $500 Nov 29th – I offered my hand to Miss -----. Dec 11th I obtained hers – February 8th 1827 I was married. Moved to my fathers March 4th 1827 I recommenced teaching school at the house known by the name of Albritton’s School house 18 or 20 pupils and closed my school Oct. 4th 1827 No. 24th 1827 I moved from my Fathers & commenced Keeping house with 8 in family & gave my attention to farming Account of Time A Journal – 1828 Winsor Dixon – after building & preparing my farm I plant the first corn March 27th 1828 that I ever planted for myself – how with all the pleasures pospute ??? of husbanding before me I looked forward and anticipated the harvest June 8th 1828 – I received a pledge of the kindness of Providence – But alas! Hines, John Wilkerson END OF DOCUMENT INDENTURE NOTE: This was attached to one of the Religious Papers. It is a partial Deed referred to by Priscilla Carr Holliday Jordan when she had the land sold after she moved to Ms. Unfortunately the entire instrument did not survive as it is not hard cold proven who her Holliday husband was – thought to have been Thomas. 20 Nov 1835 – Titus Carr of Greene Co to Allen Carr - $1.00 conveyed a tract in Greene County – NS Great Contentney Creek (being the same sold to me by John Holliday by virtue of a deed of trust from Tillman Hollidy to him and by him conveyed to me by a deed sometime in April 1836) and the boundaries of the said tract of land will appear by reference to the following deed to wit -–a deed from Saml. Holliday to Thos Holliday dated 1 March 1790, a deed from John Holiday to Thos Holliday dated 24 Oct 1796, a deed from Jonathan Mears to Thos Holidy dated 8 March 1798, also a lot drawn by Thos Holliday rest is missing; however, on the back appears the following – Titus Carr & Allen Carr to Priscilla Holliday – Received this deed on the 14 April 1836 and recorded Book K pages 112, 13 & 14 on 7 of same month END OF DOCUMENT RELIGIOUS PAPERS Winsor Dixon was active in the Hookerton Christian Church and there are several papers in this Collection regarding both the Church and Dixon’s personal religious beliefs. Some are letters he wrote but there is not a lot of genealogical information in these papers. What genealogical information found has been abstracted. It is interesting that in his Will, Dixon left his son, Franklin, his books, and some of those books are currently at Barton College in Wilson according to Dr. Walter Anderson. Many of the early records of Hookerton have been preserved and are at Barton and will one day, be abstracted. There are some legal documents attached to some of these papers which have been pulled and placed above. HISTORY OF THE CHURCH AT HOOKERTON These notes are entitled A Sketch of the rise and fall of the FW Baptist Church of Christ in Hookerton (fore runner of the Hookerton Christian Church, Disciples of Christ) In august of 1829 a revival took place in the Church of Grimsley and many were converted and it spread in the area of Hookerton. At the Jan Q meeting at Grimsley an arm of Grimsley was to be organized at Hookerton. In March 1830 Elder Jesse Heath was called to be the minister. Elder James Moore ws then called to the pastoral care. Jesse Vause, Lewis Hartsfield, Thomas Moore and David Hartsfield were ordained. NOTE: Additional information can be found in the “North Carolina Disciples of Christ” by Dr. C. C. Ware LETTER OF 3 Aug 1851 Appears to be a letter to the Bethel Conference – mentions 45 members – delegates from the church were William P. Dixon appears to have had POA for the Holliday interests in Greene Co. These are just abstracts 2 March 1844 – letter from John Holliday in Ms. to Winsor Dixon in Green Co – mentions he had not heard from Dixon since the last letter brought by Wesley Gibbons. Wished to have a statement of accounts sent by Wm. Dixon – asked that Wm. Dixon bring old Lize to Ms. as he would be taken care of without working – wanted Winsor to try and sell Thos’s land for $1000 and understood that Wm. A. Darden wished to give notes for this land and if he will give $1250 in notes, sell it to him (except Jas Westbrooks) – wants to know what became of the suit with Sally Carr – wants the deed from Jonas Taylor for land I am – next word not readable – to that county in July – wants to know the price of negroes END OF DOCUMENT 4 Oct 1845 - from Ms. – not complete letter but appears to be from John Holliday to Winsor Dixon – received something by Ben. T. Fortson and something from Wm. Dixon (word used for both appears to be T or F acins) with the accounts of interest in Greene Co – mentions Wm. Holliday dec – Holliday regrets Dixon has not disposed of the Isaac Brand place and 30 acres that Dun did not take -–asks Dixon to do what he can and they will divide the profits – said that Thomas could not go to NC this winter but wishes Winsor to dispose of his land for negroes and will take $1000 for the land or negroes and would prefer two boys – wishes to know about suit with Sally Carr – rest is missing END OF DOCUMENT 18 March 1845 – copy of letter from Winsor Dixon to John and Sam Holliday – mentions he had written several times with no response – mentions sending accounting by William Dixon when he came to visit – mentions Lize and his work and it appears that Lize was a cooper (see above letter) – mentions been trying to sell Thomas’ land – has tried to sell land that Brand is living on END OF DOCUMENT Partial letter from John Holliday to Winsor – no date Mentions he and Thomas have 275 acres in cotton – mentions he bought 11 hands and now have 37 in the field and need more – they have 1280 acres of land that is worth $25 an acres – an additional 1200 acres worth about $5 an acre – mentions Willis is going to school – mentions Saml is oversize ??? – Tillman is overseeing in the neighborhood of Thos Dixon, Rasberry and Facy ??? – his mother’s health is not as good as it was – Maria and our two children send regards END OF DOCUMENT ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
