ESTATE RECORDS 1839-1845 BILL MURPHY INTRODUCTION This volume contains the abstracts of the only volume of Estate Papers for Greene County prior to the 1870s. We are lucky in that is was one of the few items saved from the devastating courthouse fire in 1876, for in many cases it helps fill the gap in information on the people of the county prior to the informative 1850 Federal Census. There are several different storied as to the courthouse fire. But the story which has come down in my family (and the one to which I usually adher) is that a distant uncle of ours, one William J. Taylor, more commonly known was "One Eye Bill" due to the loss of an eye, was a Scalawag and attached himself to the Reconstruction Government of the county. He was sheriff for a while and as such foreclosed on a number of farms and plantations for non-payment of Federal back taxes. To make a little extra money, he got into the habit of selling the same tracts of land or parts of the same tract over and over again to different persons. His last term of office was in 1874-1876 at which time the Reconstruction Government was replaced. He was ousted from office and judgments brought against him for land fraud and other crimes. To cover his misdeeds, he set fire to the courthouse to destroy the evidence (and in so doing, also destroyed the public records and history of Greene, Glasgow and Dobbs Counties). The Estate volume abstracted here had been taken from the courthouse by the Clerk for some copy work and was thus one of the only records saved. Nothing could ever be proved against Old One Eye and happily, he disappeared from both the local and family scene shortly thereafter. Although the volume is entitled Estate Records, a number of different types of records are recorded on its pages. In addition to the settlements and divisions of estates, there are also guardian accounts, allotments of dowers and years provisions for widows, sales of land, property and slaves, divisions of lands and slaves, administrators and executors accounts and jury returns to determine sanity and the changing of the course of public roads. Each abstract gives the name of the person to whom the entry refers, the dates it was filed, the type of entry and a listing of the names of all person who appear in the entry. Also included is whether the person is a creditor or debtor to the persons mentioned in the entry and items of interest such as expenditures for dancing lessons, coffins, newspapers, travel, schooling, etc. The page on which each abstract appears in the original volume is given and each abstract is assigned a consecutive number for easy reference. This number, not the page number, is the number used in the index. The index is a general index and contains not only personal names but also subjects and place names.
