Vines-Speight Family Lawsuit 

The following are notes from a lawsuit from 1890 that were in File J. 1248, 
Wilson County Courthouse in 1938. These typewritten notes from 1938 are found in 
the Tabitha DeVisconti Papers, #480, ECU Manuscript Collection, J. Y. Joyner 
Library, East Carolina University, Greenville, NC. See also: PCGQ, Vol. 3, Feb.

Plaintiffs by their Great Aunt Mary V SMAW. whole sister of Sam VINES and 
Elizabeth SPEIGHT. 
William SMAW- Ellen FARROW- Wm. EBORN- Mary REID- Mary C. WILLIAMS- Martha 
RIDDLE- Ellen BARNARD- Sally EBORN- Margaret CLOSS- Sophia WILLIAMSON- Flavius 
SMAW- Anne CUTHRELL- Laura BROWN- Sam WHITE. 

Sam VINES died intestate 18th Nov. 1844. 

Latita JOHNSTON who was a neice of Sam VINES and second cousin of Cora B. WARD 
left issue: Franklin JOHNSTON a son of one of the plaintiffs. 

Robt. JOHNSTON, dead leaving issue the plaintiffs: R. N. JOHNSTON, Martha BROOKS, 
I. N. JOHNSTON, M. A. WILLIAMS, James JOHNSTON, Louvinia BITTIS; also Chas. 
JOHNSTON another son of Latitia JOHNSTON who is dead leaving issue the plaintiff 
Charles H. JOHNSTON; also James JOHNSTON another son of Latitia JOHNSTON who is 
dead leaving issue the plaintiffs: G. S. JOHNSTON, J. H. JOHNSTON, J. F. 
JOHNSTON, Mary T. OWEN, H. A. MOORE wife of T. J. MOORE. 
H. A. MOORE is dead leaving issue the plaintiffs: Ella MOORE, Corrinne FELTON, 
Milton MOORE, Calle ELLIS and Mary MOORE. 
John Vines JOHNSTON, another son of Latitia JOHNSTON who is dead leaving issue: 
Olivia JOHNSTON, Fanny JOHNSTON, Bettie JOHNSTON and John JOHNSTON. 
Latitia EVANS, daughter of Latitia JOHNSTON who is dead leaving issue: William 
EVANS, Stephen EVANS, Joe EVANS and James EVANS. 
Stephen JOHNSTON, another son of Latitia JOHNSTON who is dead leaving issue the 
plaintiff S. M. JOHNSTON. 
Mary SUMMERELL, daughter of Latitia JOHNSTON who is dead leaving issue the 
plaintiffs: Latitia DUPREE and M. L. ROUNTREE. 
Martha STANCILL, daughter of Latitia JOHNSTON who is dead leaving issue the 
plaintiffs: R. W. STANCILL, Nathan STANCILL, Jas. STANCILL, Godfrey STANCILL, T. 
J. STANCILL, Ella STANCILL, Alice STANCILL, Josephine STANCILL, Emma STANCILL, 
Virginia FORBES and Olivia HODGES. 

Charlie VINES, son of Jno. VINES who was a brother of Samuel VINES. 
Charles VINES had issue: 
John VINES, who is dead and has issue: Mary SUGGS, Olivia BARNES and Linda COBB. 
Charles VINES Jr., who is dead and has issue the plaintiffs: T. B. VINES, W. W. 
VINES, J. T. VINES, C. C. VINES, Martha W. COOK, Nannie V. TERRELL and Mary V. 
BROWN, wife of G. E. BROWN, who is dead leaving issue the plaintiff Lula BROWN. 

Latitia Vines NEWTON 

Questions asked Jas. P. SPEIGHT at time of action in 1890: Jas. P. SPEIGHT 
grandson of Capt. Seth SPEIGHT aged 76 in 1890. 

Question: State if you know of your own knowledge or from report in your family 
connections, how many brothers and sisters Samuel VINES left him surviving, or if 
dead had issue living at Cora B. WARD'S death? 

Answer: one half brother by the name of John VINES, then my grandmother Elizabeth 
SPEIGHT and Mary SMAW were his own sisters. Elizabeth SPEIGHT was the wife of 
Seth SPEIGHT Sr., and Mary SMAW the wife of Thomas SMAW and daughters of William 
VINES, the father of Samuel VINES. They all left issue living at Cora B. WARD'S 
death. 

Question: Who were the issue of Elizabeth SPEIGHT? 
Answer: 

(1) William Vines SPEIGHT 

(2) Seth SPEIGHT Jr. 

(3) Thos. SPEIGHT 

(4) Mary S. GIBBONS 

(5) Fanny S. HARPER 

(6) Lemon SPEIGHT 

(7) Nancy S. POPE 

(8) Jesse SPEIGHT 

William Vines SPEIGHT had issue: Elizabeth S. STANTON, Harriet S. DARDEN wife of 
W. A. DARDEN Sr., Temperance LITTLE wife of Wm. LITTLE, Nancy LITTLE wife of Seth 
LITTLE, Edwin G. SPEIGHT now dead- no issue. 

Seth SPEIGHT Jr. had issue: Jas. P. SPEIGHT 

Thos. SPEIGHT had issue: Thomas L. SPEIGHT, Elizabeth SPEIGHT, Jno. S. SPEIGHT, 
Louis Skidmore SPEIGHT, and Cicero SPEIGHT. 

Mary S. GIBBONS had issue: Elizabeth HARPER wife of Ormond HARPER, Nancy HARPER 
wife of Jno. HARPER, Marinda MOSELEY wife of Matthew MOSELEY, Mary Lassiter wife 
of Stephen LASSITER, Jas. GIBBONS, Seth GIBBONS, and Henry H. GIBBONS. 

Fanny S. HARPER had issue: John J. HARPER, Wm. HARPER, Harriet HARPER and Martha 
HARPER. 

Lemon SPEIGHT had issue: Nancy S. DERING, Celia S. JOYNER, and Mary S. BEAMAN. 
Nancy S. POPE died leaving no issue. 

Jesse SPEIGHT had issue the plaintiffs: Maria S. HOLLIDAY wife of Jno. HOLLIDAY, 
Penelope S. CANNON wife of Thos. CANNON, Elizabeth DIXON wife of Samuel DIXON and 
Joseph W. SPEIGHT.
