Greene County, NC - Court Records File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Grace Williamson Turner Edited by Guy Potts The Deposition of Pearces Barfield The examination of Pearces Barfield of Dobbs County and State of North Carolina taken upon Oath Before me Benjamin Sheppard Esqr a Justice assigned to keep the peace for & in the said County the first day of September in the year ___ near the House of Willie Barrow in the aforesaid upon View of the Body of Reddick Barfield then and there lying Dead ___ The said Pearies Barfield maked Oath on the 31st day of August last past she the deponant was riding in company with the ___ Reddick Barfield and Micajah Barrow on the way ___ Stephen Cades to Willie Barrows and that ___ they were going one of them mentioned a despute that had been between them when they had settled and seemed to express n___ in having settled it & gave each other their hand after some time Micajah Barrow asked Reddick Barfield why he would be so Unkind to his Daughter This deponant that he would not give her a ring which he had taken from her and that after some talk on the subject Reddick Barfield said he would give it to her as soon ___ he got to the House & took a drink of ___rog but still mentioned at times that it was his own ring, at length Micajah Barrow said to this Deponant you dont care so much about the ring do you she this deponant said she did Because her Grand Mother gave it to her On which Reddick Barfield told Micajah Barrow that he had a good mind to drive his, Micajahs teeth down his throat with his gun. Micajah Barrow asked him why he would attempt to do that ___ as that they had made Friends he Micajah would not strike him Reddick for five hundred pounds. The Said Reddick Barfield immediately dismounted himself from off His Horse and made a Blow with his gun and struck the said Micajah Barrow on the head & knocked him off his Horse Micajah Barrow attempted to rise the said Reddick Barfield Repeated his Blow and struck the said Micajah on the head which throwed him down with his face on the ground and he appeared as tho Dead or Stunded, the said Reddick called out and said God Cajah I will kill you I will ___ Damned if I dont and repeated his blow again Micajah staid on the ground Reddick turned of from him to catch his horse which was going off and when Reddick got f___ of his horse and turned about he Micajah riseing from the ground and had taken hold on a pine saplin for support Reddick immediately left his horse made at him and round a stump which was in his way To get to him and when he came near Micajah Barrow struck him with his fist and beat him the said Barfield over the stump and he fell Micajah Barrow got hold on the Barrell part of the gun which Reddick crossed with ___ he struck the said Reddick and as ___ made his Blows Reddick says Cajah ___ beg and no other words past between them and the said Reddick laid Dead and this deponant further saith that she hath often heard said Reddick say that he would kill the said Micajah & that he would never be at rest untill he had dont it and that she was at the house of William Barfield Sometime past and that the said Reddick ___ ___ over in the neighbourhood of the said Micajah Barrow and he come to the house of said William Barfield and he the said William asked him the said Reddick if he was come(?) Reddick said yes, the said William asked him the said Reddick if he had done what he went to do Reddick told him the said William Barfield, no. The sd William very warmly exclaimed agt him Reddick and asked him why he did not kill the Damnd son of a B___ at once ___ have done with it for that he was a Damn fool and would go poking about and not do it untill it would be too late for that he might have killed fifteen Micajah Barrows before this and have ___ Shiping(?) and been gone to sea and never been Troubled about it and damn him fer a fool do it the next time he went before he returned again, The said Reddick Barfield, knoded his head at the said William Barfield and said to him as this deponant understood, not talk so free fer that it should soon be done & further saith not.
