Greene County, NC - Court - Lassiter vs Williams, 1837 2625 – LASSITER vs WILLIAMS – 1837 Supreme Court Case found at the NC Archives, Raleigh, NC Uzzell Lassiter vs John Williams, Adm of Benj Reddick – filed Dec 18 1837 Greene Co Fall term 1837 – Uzzel Lassiter by his attorneys, Wright C. Stanly and William D. Mosely Esq, came into Court in Greene Co with a bill against John Williams adm of Benjamin Riddick dec – Henry Miller, Chairman of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions – plea of debt for $25,000 – John H. Bryan attorney for def Action of debt brought on the administrator bond given by the def as adm of Benjamin Riddick – John Riddick had a will in 1820 – copy annexed - the executor named renounced her right – after all the debts were paid the adm delivered to the widow, Martha Riddick, all the personal and perishable estate which was given to her by the will – Williams sold the personal estate except the Negroes mentioned in the will – what was left after the debts were paid remained in the hands of said Williams which was $1665.55 on 16 Oct 1822 – later Benjamin Riddick, son of John Riddick, mentioned in the will died intestate and without issue and under 21 years of age – said Benjamin Riddick left surviving his mother, Martha, and Martha Ann a half sister, the wife of Uzzell Lassiter, as his next of kin – Uzzell Lassister and his wife entitled to the sum of $1665.55 The case was whether the estate of Benjamin Riddick, which he received from his father, belonged to his next of kin or to his mother.
